Trackwork 101© Training

We have an Obligation to Educate!  Track Guy Consultants has developed a practical approach to Railroad Track Construction and Basic Railroad Engineering based upon 30 years of experience in Track Construction, Track Design, and Track Maintenance. This is a full day of learning. Trackwork 101 has been designed to bring all aspects to the attendee in an easy-to-understand practical method.

The Basics of Trackwork Construction

We begin with a full day of training in the basics of Trackwork Construction called © Trackwork 101.

This course is presented as a practical approach to Track construction: Trackwork 101 is designed to offer a basic and general discussion of many aspects of track design, track construction and track maintenance. This course covers the evolution of track, how to make rail, what the labels mean, definitions, types of track, how to determine the frog number, wheel/rail interface, anatomy of a curve, calculating rail life, some FRA standards, methodologies and equipment. This is an introductory course and is not very technical. A brief video of ballasted track construction is shown also.

rail size

Rail is the largest investment that a railway will make in the Track structure. Understanding what size rail to choose can make or break your budget.

railroad track structure and load transfer

Understanding how the track structure works is imperative for track construction. Understanding how it transfers load is imperative. If one part is not working properly, it can affect all the parts.

Superelevation, alignment, distribution

Understanding how to determine the right superelevation, alignment, elevation and distribution of all the elements that make up the geometry of the track can make the difference between success and failure (or track integrity and track failure?). If the unbalance is wrong, passengers will be jerked around inside the car.

How to measure for a Frog number

Ever been out in the field and wondered what size turnout is there? Or the metal tag is so rusted you can't read what size frog it is? All turnouts and frogs are based on an angle. Learn how to do it.

Unbalance

If the unbalance is wrong, passengers will be jerked around -- possibly slamming their heads against the windows or spilling their coffee. It is extremely important to provide a smooth ride for passenger comfort and safety.

Trackwork Definitions

Trackwork has its own language and terminology. Understanding how to talk the right lingo is important for a good understanding of how it all works. If managers, superintendents, foremen, operators and laborers are not familiar with the terminology, communication breaks down and costly mistakes are made.
